Registered Mangalitsa Breed Organization And Registry Breeder

Why Mangalitsa?

Cold Hardiness.

Mangalitsas woolly coat make them well suited for cold climates. We live in a cold climate 6 months out of the year & we raise our pigs mostly outdoors, so we want to make sure they’re comfortable & thriving. Their thick curly hair has also been collected & used in various applications.

Conservation.

They we’re almost extinct in the 1990s but farmers have been working at breeding them back into a healthy population. They originate from Hungary but have since been imported to the USA & in more recent years to Canada. Because they are not common, the genetic diversity is not as wide. It’s important to learn about their genetics & how they play a role in maintaining a healthy future of Mangalitsa & the conservation of the breed. Work done by organizations like MBOAR are crucial in this. By raising Mangalitsa you are helping to preserve a unique breed that has many important uses. Especially in a life of self sufficiency which is obvious by their popularity in the 1800s.

Good Temperament.

They are known to be more of a friendlier breed & from our experience we can agree. We don’t forget that pigs can still be dangerous & cannot always be fully trusted in the way you would trust your dog. But with a good temperament we feel better when it comes to moving & handling our herd.

Lard Breed.

Mangalitsa are a lard breed pig meaning very fatty! Their fat is highly nutritious, rich in antioxidants, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids with a similar fat content to olive oil. Can be used as a healthy alternative to butter. On top of the lard being used in cooking it can also be used to make soap, lotion & candle making.

Quality Product.

The end product that you get when slowly pasture raising Mangalitsa is incomparable to other pork. It’s very rich, dark & has beautiful marbling in the meat often resembling a beautiful steak. It’s also well suited for various types of curing like salami, lardo, capicollo etc. The fine taste and quality of mangalitsa pork is known around the world, often labeled as the “kobe beef of pork”.

Pasture Raised

Our pigs are pasture and forest raised with lots of love and room to root, play and exercise. They are fed a Non-GMO feed, free of corn and soy as well as a variety of produce and forage. They are then finished on barley resulting in a dark, flavourful, marbled end product.
